Mandarin Middle School
Mary Kay Going, the Assistant Superintendent of Education Services, attended the parent meeting to share the steps being taken in establishing the Middle School Mandarin Program at Bayside Stem.
It was shared:
- The district is making an investment in the Mandarin Middle School Program and has hired a Mandarin Language teacher to teach the two period Mandarin course and work to develop/finalize the program curriculum between the Elementary and the High School program.
- The Middle School Mandarin Program will include the following components:
- 2 period block of Mandarin Foreign Language, Math, English, Science (could be STEM), Social Studies (possibly deferred) and PE. In high school, Mandarin foreign language instruction is typically one period.
- The program will align with the feeder high school district to help transition kids to be eligible for a Seal of Biliteracy; a designation on diploma that they are bilingual and biliterate. Ways to get the seal typically include AP language test, 4 years of a HS language, or testing out of AP testing.
- The high school program teaches both traditional and simplified characters; so the new teacher will be looking at how to transition the kids in terms of these curriculum.
- More information will be available at the start of the new school year after our middle school teacher has had a chance to look at our assessment date, meet her students, and collaborate with the College Park team.
