The mission of Friends of the Mandarin Scholars (FMS) is to support Mandarin education, provide resources for cultural events, and foster understanding and respect between Chinese people and the people of the United States through financial generosity and volunteer commitment.

We are focusing on the following activities in support of this mission:

The Purpose of the Friends of the Mandarin Scholars in the SMFCSD(FMS-SMFCSD) is to promote understanding of China to Americans, to ensure Mandarin language learning, to enhance Chinese cultural and historic education, and to promote Chinese visual and performing arts through its connection to College Park Elementary School and the Bayside S.T.E. M. Academy (STEM) in the San Mateo-Foster City School District, the continuing support of the Mandarin Resource Center located at College Park School, and Mandarin educational support for children and adults in San Mateo County. These purposes will be accomplished by three major activities:

1. Kindergarten to eighth grade Mandarin Immersion classes as an integral part of the curriculum at College Park School and at the Bayside S.T.E.M. Academy. This activity will be conducted by the teachers, administrators and staff at the respective schools in the San Mateo Foster City School District during the normal school years and school days on the respective school sites. This educational purpose is the major activity for the FMS-SMFCSD and will likely consume 50-60% of our time and funding. This activity may include but not be limited to:

  • providing funding for teachers and staff
  • providing Mandarin curriculum materials
  • provide hardware, software and personnel for computer augmented learning in Mandarin and English
  • providing field trips to local Asian museums and centers for College Park and STEM students
  • providing a link between the schools and the Asian community
  • coordinating volunteers to assist students and teachers
  • assisting teachers to find Mandarin and Asian experts to visit classrooms

Mandarin Resource Center at College Park School will be a lending library of books, audiovisual materials, artifacts, musical instruments, and other instructional or cultural materials to support the Kindergarten to eighth grade Mandarin Immersion classes at College Park School and at the Bayside S.T.E.M. Academy. This library will be a secondary effort for the FMS-SMFCSD and will likely consume 20-30% of our time and funding. This activity may include but not be limited to:

  • seeking donations of materials for the library
  • providing volunteers to staff the library during non-school hours
  • providing funding to purchase specific materials requested by teachers, staff and parents.
  • providing social events to advertise the use of the library to non-College Park and Bayside STEM teachers and parents
  • providing appropriate access to the Mandarin Resource Center to the general public during non-school hours

3. Asian enrichment opportunities and community events at College Park School, the Bayside S.T.E.M. Academy will be accessible to teachers, students, parents and the people of the greater Bay Area. These classes and events will be coordinated by College Park and STEM teachers, parents and FMS-SMFCSD Directors, members, and/or their agents. These classes and events will be a secondary effort for the FMS-SMFCSD and will likely consume 20-30% of our time and funding. This activity may include but not be limited to:
