Our mission is to support K-8 Mandarin instruction within the San Mateo-Foster City School District in order to enable students from all backgrounds the opportunity to develop a mastery of Mandarin Chinese language and appreciation of Chinese culture. Friends of the Mandarin Scholars in the SMFCSD (FMS-SMFCSD) was established in 2011 to raise funds to support the Mandarin program and help ensure its ongoing success.

What does FMS do?

• Pays for Mandarin classroom teaching aides at College Park and Bayside to allow the teachers to work with smaller groups of students for more intensive Mandarin instruction
• Pays for Mandarin cultural enrichment specialists at Bayside (calligraphy, art, music, dance, and martial arts)
• Funds Mandarin-specific classroom materials at College Park and Bayside
• Provides the funding for before- and after-school Mandarin homework help at College Park
• Funds professional development for Mandarin language educators at College Park and Bayside
• Supports student participation in events (e.g., College Park participation in San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade; Bayside Mandarin program End of Year Celebration of Learning)
